WSOU at CBI
Fifteen student leaders from WSOU 89.5 FM and SHU TV attended the National Student Media Convention from College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI) in Denver, Colorado, from October 23-25.
This conference invited media students in radio and TV broadcasting to participate in breakout sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions and networking events.
Ten students in student manager positions in WSOU engaged in this professional development opportunity, with three students leading their own workshops. Chris Aurilio, director of production facilities for WSOU and SHU TV, also presented his “Improv for Broadcasters” workshop for college students in media.
Chris Heite, station manager for WSOU, presented “Managing a Radio Station with College Classes,” a roundtable discussion drawing over forty students from across the country. He explained that his involvement in WSOU gave him the confidence and communication skills necessary to lead this discussion and connect with peers in the field.
“Through the social and networking skills I’ve acquired in my time at Seton Hall so far, I found that I was prepared to attend a conference such as CBI,” said Heite. “I can’t thank Seton Hall enough for this great learning opportunity.”
WSOU Sports Director Lauren Reese also contributed valuable student insight with her "Raising Voices: Women in College Sports” panel discussion. “Being selected to present my own panel about raising the voices of women in sports, something I am so passionate about, was a tremendous experience,” said Reese. “I felt so seen, and I believe the people who attended my panel felt seen as well.”
WSOU also demonstrated their success as an organization, with their Hall Line show taking home the second-place award for Best Sports Show.
In addition to the WSOU participants, five student producers from SHU TV attended the CBI conference. Gino Granato, sports director and producer at SHU TV, was excited to share the connections he made with peers in the media field. “It was a great opportunity to network with other students in TV and broadcasting,” said Granato. “They gave me great advice on new projects for SHU TV and how to handle careers past college.”
