Seton Hall Celebrates Progress of Academies at Innovative Ideas Networking Brunch

Faculty and administrators gathered together to celebrate the progress and achievements
of the University’s Academies program at an Innovative Ideas Networking Brunch held on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
The Academies program is an initiative aimed at increasing collaboration among the various disciplines across campus. Led by the Office of the Provost, each Academy was awarded funding to be allocated over one to three years. Now in its third year, the program has supported various projects designed to increase interdisciplinarity across the academy, including program offerings and faculty research projects.
Interim President Katia Passerini, Ph.D., emphasized knowledge sharing across the University through conversation and collaboration during the brunch, stating, "Knowledge grows through generative conversations and learning from each other." Interim Assistant Provost for Academic Excellence and Assessment Sona Patel, Ph.D., additionally shared, "We are impressed at seeing the commitment and excitement of our Academies, with 11 of our ongoing academies presenting their work at the Innovative Ideas Networking Brunch." The 2021-22 awardees presented their outcomes at the event, as these projects come to an end this month.
Elizabeth McCrea, Ph.D., associate professor with the Stillman School of Business, presented on the successes of the Academy for Business Humanities, which includes the development of a Minor in Business Humanities and a funded grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in collaboration Abe Zakhem, Ph.D., associate professor with the College of Arts and Sciences.
Penina Orenstein, Ph.D., shared the achievements of the Academy for Applied Analytics and Technology (A3T), which include several new programs such as the M.S. in Financial Technology and undergraduate majors in Business Analytics and Global Supply Chain Management. In addition, their academy has hosted the New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA) Symposium, which brought together 18 higher education institutions on topics of big data and advanced computing.
With one more year remaining for the 2022-23 projects, awardees presented their progress thus far. Ruth Tsuria, Ph.D., presented on behalf of the Academy for Health Communication and Innovation, sharing that the team is on course to launch a new interdisciplinary journal by next May.
Genevieve Pinto-Zipp, P.T., Ed.D., and Leslie Rippon, Ph.D., ATC, presented on their teams’ progress in avatar and virtual world development, components of their Academies aimed at designing a variety of learning experiences to train students in health professions to effectively support patients and interact with other professionals in managing a patient’s plan of care in simulated but realistic scenarios.
All academies shared their "tips for success" to the seven newly funded Academies listed below and the newly funded Idea Halls. The Academies Program continues to drive innovation and excellence at Seton Hall University, demonstrating the power of collaborative efforts in advancing the institution's mission and goals.
Interim President Katia Passerini shared the following after the event, "I was impressed with the quality ideas, the collaboration across units, and the presence and the passion across groups." Interim Provost Erik Lillquist added, "The University looks forward to seeing the continued impact of the next round of projects."
