Professor Hellwig’s areas of specialization are philosophy of law and ethics (including applied ethics). He has written on issues such as the desirability of living forever, moral arguments against combat sports, and respect for legal institutions as such. Professor Hellwig’s recent publications include: “Could Hell Be Any Worse than Doc Benton’s Immortality?” in The Ultimate Supernatural and Philosophy (Carus Books, 2022), “What Can ‘Boom Boom Mancini’ Teach Us about Boxing and Ethics?” in Warren Zevon and Philosophy (Carus Books, 2023), and “Should We Flip All the Police Trucks?” in Essays on the Dead Kennedys and Philosophy (McFarland & Company, forthcoming 2025). Since 2022, Dr. Hellwig has regularly taught Environmental Ethics (ENVL/PHIL 2115) at Seton Hall and is currently working on an article about ecocentric approaches to climate change policy. He also created and teaches the course The Basics of Law: Criminal Law and Torts (PHIL 2055).
