Training Opportunities
Doctoral Psychology Externship & Masters Social Work Advanced Practicum
Graduate training positions are available to qualified graduate students for the nine-month academic year at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) of Seton Hall University. The Center is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS).
Purpose
The program is designed to provide graduate students with a multi-faceted training experience through which an integration of theories and clinical skills can be achieved. Externs experience firsthand the full range of services and activities provided by university counseling centers. Trainees will understand the role of the university mental health professional within a college campus through a variety of clinical and training experiences.
Structure and Activities
Our training programs consists of one full academic year (September through May only) of placement at The Counseling and Psychological Services Center for approximately sixteen hours per week (flexible based on academic program requirements). Trainees are involved in all aspects of clinical, consultation, and psychoeducational work related to working as a mental health professional within a university counseling center.
Training activities include:
- Observing and conducting intake interviews/ clinical interviewing
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Risk assessment & Crisis intervention
- Planning and conducting psycho-educational outreach activities to the campus community
- Participation in weekly training seminars that are focused on university mental health concerns.
- Case conference
- Intake/treatment team meetings
Supervision:
- One hour/ week of individual clinical supervision
- Two hours of group supervision
- Additional supervision and consultation as needed
- Live supervision during intake assessments or co-facilitating groups with a staff member
While feedback is provided on an ongoing basis, written and verbal performance evaluation occurs at the middle and end of each semester. Feedback is based on all aspects of the trainees professional conduct at our site and we work with your academic training programs to provide this feedback.
Qualifications
Trainees must be enrolled in a graduate Doctoral Program or a Masters in Social Work Program that is primarily clinical/counseling in nature. Preference will be given to those students who have completed a practicum or skills course and have had some exposure to clinical work. Completion of coursework in theories of psychotherapy and psychopathology is desirable. Applicants must provide documentation from their graduate program that they are ready for this placement
Applications
Applications are accepted during the months of December through January, in anticipation of the next training year. The following materials are required for a completed application:
- Cover letter stating your interests
- Current curriculum vita or resume
- Official transcript of graduate work, including courses currently underway
- Letter of approval from the graduate program verifying readiness for the externship placement
- Two letters of recommendation
Students from Academic Programs who are part of NYNJADOT or PENDLEDOT will submit applications through the NMS (National Matching Service) Portal based on guidelines provided by their DCT.

Interviews
Interviews will take place by invitation via email to you and your training director, typically during January-February. Positions are offered soon thereafter.
