Scholarships Abroad

Studying abroad does cost money, but fortunately there are tons of scholarships available for students and their families looking to support their international adventure. 

Use the links below to explore funding opportunities by the type of study abroad scholarship available:

Seton Hall Scholarships

Knapp Scholarship
Recognizing the benefit of an enriching student experience at Seton Hall University and understanding the impact a broader worldview and international exposure can have for students, Lori Chapin ’94 and Steven Knapp ’93, have chosen to recognize the exemplary work of students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences by providing financial assistance for students interested in pursing a summer study abroad experience.

Tomason Scholarship
The Tomason International Scholars Endowed Scholarship has been established by Bruce and Carol Tomason. This scholarship supports students seeking an enriching global experience as part of their academic career at Seton Hall.

Italian Studies Scholarships
The Italian Studies program offers several scholarships for students who attend Italian Studies study abroad programs or take Italian classes during the semester. These scholarships are only for Italian Studies students.

Robert C. Troccoli India Study Abroad Award
The Stillman School alumnus Mr. Robert C. Troccoli, recognizing India as one of countries to illustrate most aspects of globalization, twelve awards of $1500 each to offset India travel cost for Doing Business in India 2025, a Spring Break Faculty Led Program.

Boren Scholarship
Boren Scholarships provide funding opportunities for students to study less commonly taught languages. The area of interest could be anywhere around the globe. Boren Scholarships promote long term cultural immersion, therefore, two or more semesters of studying abroad is highly encouraged. In exchange of the funding, students must agree to the NSEP Service Requirement.

Critical Language Scholarship
The CLS Program requires students to study intensively in a cultural and language immersion program overseas. It is initiated by the government to encourage students to study and master critical languages. Applicants must be in four-year undergraduate programs.

Location-Based Scholarships

Asia and Oceania

Freeman Asia Scholarship
Freeman Asia provides scholarships for students studying abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Students must be a current need-based financial aid recipients, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8, and must be enrolled in study abroad programs in certain Asian countries.

Bridging Scholarship
AATJ provides scholarships for undergraduate students looking to study abroad in Japan for a semester or full Academic year. Previous Japanese language experience is not a requirement. Award amounts range from $2500-$4500 depending on length of study.

Japanese Consulate in New York Scholarships
The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology offers scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing Japan-related studies, as well as graduate students looking to conduct research.

Study Australia
A database of scholarships through the Australian Government offered to international students looking to study abroad, as well as some additional information about financial aid.

Europe

Ernst Mach Grant in Austria
The Ernst Mach Grant is available for students who plan to study abroad at an Austrian university for a semester or a full academic year. This monthly grant would be able to support students participating in Seton Hall's exchange program at MCI Innsbruck or another program at an Austrian institution of applied sciences. Interested students will be required to submit recommendation letters and proof of their acceptance as part of their online application.

Switzerland Scholarships
Study abroad students in Switzerland can receive scholarships from the Swiss government, Swiss Universities, or other organizations such as SEMS. Most Swiss government scholarships are granted to postgraduate candidates and researchers, whereas Swiss Universities and SEMS scholarships are granted to Master's and Bachelor's students.

German Academic Exchange Service(DAAD)
A database of scholarships available to students of all levels looking to study abroad in Germany. Includes undergraduate scholarships, research grants, and internship opportunities.

ItaliaRail Scholarship
ItaliaRail offers 3 $1000 scholarships, plus a 3-day ItaliaRail pass, for students studying for a full semester in Italy. They are committed to helping students study abroad in Italy and immerse themselves in the country’s rich and dynamic culture.

SWEA New Jersey Scholarship
The Swedish Women’s Education Association of New Jersey awards $5000 per year to qualified students looking to pursue academic or professional research/studies or artistic endeavors pertaining to Sweden, including study abroad. Individuals must have roots and/or current residence in New Jersey.

British Council Scholarships
The British Council has a database of scholarships for students of all levels looking to study abroad in the UK, as well as additional information about the process to study abroad in Britain.

Middle East

Turkish Coalition of America Scholarships
The Turkish Coalition of America offers scholarships for minority students of certain backgrounds to study in Turkey, Northern Cyprus, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Scholarships are available for both graduate and undergraduate programs. Scholarships range from $500-$2,000.

Masa Israel Journey
Masa Israel Journey focuses on creating immersive experiences for young diaspora Jews, offering study, volunteer, and professional development opportunities. Scholarships available for Jewish students without Israeli citizenship who are looking to study abroad in Israel. Scholarship rates are proportional to the length of the program.

Need-Based Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides for students of limited financial means a chance to study abroad. In order to apply, students must be receiving Federal Pell Grant. Additionally, applicants must be in good standing and submit personal essay responses.

Fund for Education Abroad
The Fund for Education Abroad is an organization committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.

Diversity Abroad
Diversity Abroad was founded with the goal to allow individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds become equipped with the skills, knowledge, and global experience to thrive in a global environment. They offer scholarships and resources for students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged, first generation, and ethnic and racially diverse students.

General Scholarships

Corinne Jeannie Schillings Foundation
This organization offers study abroad scholarships for undergraduate Girl Scout Gold and Silver award recipients looking to study abroad. Awards range from $1,000-$2500.

Tortuga Backpack Scholarship
Tortuga is aiming to help travelers avoid the cost and hassle of checked luggage with carry-on-sized travel backpacks, including students studying abroad. The selected student will get $1000 and a free backpack.

Bright!Tax Global Scholars Initiative
For U.S. students of all levels looking to study abroad at a foreign institution. Must be a U.S. citizen, very involved in the community, and have a minimum of 3.8 GPA. Requires an essay.

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund
Scholarships available for students looking to use their international experience for social change. Requires a personal statement and letter of recommendation. Up to $15,000 available.

Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship
A purely merit-based scholarship aiming to help high-achieving students earn an education and can be applied to a study abroad program. Requires a personal statement.

Go Overseas Scholarship
Includes locational and general scholarships for students looking to study abroad, as well as general study abroad guides. Awards over $175,000 in scholarships every year.

Lerna Study Abroad Scholarship
$2000 scholarship available to college students planning to study abroad. Requires a short essay on a specific prompt.
