Profiles of the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute Advisory Council: Sara Peña

The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute is pleased to announce the ongoing dedication of Sara Peña to its 2024-2026 Advisory Council. Peña, who serves as Director of External Affairs for PSEG brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to her role. A native of Newark with Latina roots, Sara is a highly regarded servant leader in New Jersey, earning praise for her contributions to community engagement and youth development from notable organizations like the City of Newark and was named twice to NJ’s INSIDER 100: Policy-Makers Power List.

With a bachelor’s degree in management science from Kean University and a master’s in public administration from Rutgers University-Newark Campus, Ms. Peña has committed herself to uplifting underserved communities. Most recently, she is the recipient of the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute Viva Award, which celebrates the philanthropic accomplishments of a Latine/a/o/x who gives service in the advancement of the community. Throughout her career, she has held various leadership roles, all geared toward empowering others.

Peña is poised to enhance the Institute's impact in neighboring communities. "My core values are community engagement and uplifting youth. As a member of the Advisory Council, I look forward to collaborating with individuals who share my dedication to empowering youth through education," says Peña. Her commitment to this cause is evident in her role as the founder of the Boys to Leaders Foundation, a 501c3 organization that provides mentorship, leadership development and scholarships to young men. "Every young person deserves equal educational opportunities, and financial barriers should not act as a barrier. Through the Institute and organizations like Boys to Leaders, we can promote educational equity."

Looking ahead, Peña acknowledges the transformative potential of the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute. "There is no equivalent elsewhere in New Jersey, and I envision it becoming the premier hub for the Latino community and its allies in higher education." As the Institute celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is grateful for leaders like Sara Peña.
