Celebrating St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Charter Day

Portrait-of-Elizabeth-Ann-SetonEvery year, the Seton Hall University community pauses on St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Charter Day to celebrate the founding of the University in 1856 and the granting of its charter by the New Jersey State legislature in 1861. It is a special opportunity for the community to reflect on Seton Hall’s history and purpose, our Catholic identity and mission.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the University will once again gather for this annual tradition, offering students, faculty, administrators and staff a variety of ways to participate throughout the day.

The commemoration will begin with Treats and Trivia, held from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. outside President’s Hall. Students are invited to stop to test their knowledge about this Seton Hall tradition, spin for a prize and grab a sweet treat. In the event of inclement weather, the activity will move to the University Center Main Lobby.

To help the community sharpen their trivia skills ahead of time, keep an eye out for new Charter Day graphics across all campuses! Charter Day facts will be featured on lawn signs around the South Orange campus and on digital screens at the Newark and Nutley campuses.

In the afternoon, the Charter Day Convocation will begin at 3 p.m. in the Event Room of the University Center. The program will include a reading of the University’s original charter and the presentation of several distinguished awards. Registration is recommended and encouraged.

Bearing the name of University’s first president, the honor is given annually to long-serving employees for distinguished service and commitment to the University’s mission, the Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid Medal for Distinguished Service, recognizes long‑serving employees who exemplify the mission and spirit of the University. The medal stands as one of the institution’s most meaningful acknowledgments of dedication and service.

The commemoration will also include the presentation of the President’s Award for Student Service, given to employees nominated directly by Seton Hall students. In addition, the University will honor the 2026 Servant Leader Scholars — students who embody the University's mission and exemplify leadership for the well-being of others.

For those unable to attend in-person, the Charter Day Convocation will also be livestreamed on the University website. New this year, viewings of the livestream will be offered on the Newark and Nutley campuses, offering a shared space to watch the event together. Additional details will be posted to the Charter Day website in the near future.
