Currently, the University’s policies on academic integrity do not include a separate clause
on the use of AI tools. As such, instructors should consider how AI can be integrated into
courses and add a statement to syllabi clearly addressing the restrictions or appropriate uses of AI within courses. When crafting your course policy, take into account considerations and limitations such as:

• Alignment with learning goals
• Equity and access for all students
• Information security and data privacy
• Copyright and academic integrity

The following examples, adapted from the Teachers College AI and Pedagogy Working Group, reflect varied stances on using AI in courses and can be revised as needed.

Example 1

No AI Use Permitted

Students are prohibited from using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to complete coursework or assignments for this class. Violation of this policy will be considered academic dishonesty and handled according to the policy outlined in this syllabus and the University’s academic integrity procedures. Disability Support Services (DSS) authorizes reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities to ensure they are afforded the opportunity to fully express their knowledge of course material. If you are a student registered with DSS with an AI accommodation, please speak with me directly about your needs.

Example 2

AI Use Permitted for Individual Assignments

Students may use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for specific assignments as indicated. Each assignment will specify whether AI can be used and how it should be utilized. Students are responsible for carefully reading and following these guidelines. Proper citations detailing the specific AI tools and models used must be included. Unauthorized use of AI tools will be considered academic dishonesty and handled according to the policy outlined in this syllabus and the University’s academic integrity procedures. Disability Support Services (DSS) authorizes reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities to ensure they can fully express their knowledge of the course material. Example 3

AI Use Permitted for Specific Purposes

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may be used for the following tasks and purposes in this course:

• Helping you find background information about a topic
• Generating summaries or explanations of challenging material for your own reflection
• Drafting outlines to help you organize your thoughts
• Improving grammar and style

AI tools may NOT be used for any other purposes, including:

• Drafting writing assignments
• Analyzing data

AI tools in this course are permitted only for the specific tasks listed above. Students must
include citations detailing the specific AI tools and models used and how they were utilized.

Example 4

Instructor Approval Required Before Use

Students are permitted to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in their coursework only after obtaining explicit approval from the instructor. Before using any AI technology, students must submit a brief written proposal outlining how the AI tool will be used and its purpose in the context of the assignment. Approval will be granted based on the appropriateness and educational value of the proposed use. Students must include citations detailing the specific AI tools and models used. Unauthorized use will be considered academic dishonesty and will be addressed according to the policy outlined in this syllabus and the University’s academic integrity procedures. Example 5

AI Use Generally Permitted with Attribution or Disclosure

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are generally allowed in this course for research and assignment completion, provided that all AI-generated content is clearly attributed in the student’s work. Students must include citations specifying the exact AI tools and models used. Failure to properly attribute AI-assisted work will be considered academic dishonesty and will be addressed according to the policy outlined in this syllabus and the University’s academic integrity procedures.
